It’s more than pushing the shutter …Photographic art evokes emotion that only comes from relationship between Artist and Subject

One just has to sit and develop a relationship with the subject, be it landscape, person, or animal … mediocre photographs are the ones that come from one lucky “shot” in the midst of thousands, great “photographs” are just great photographs, and excellent “art images” require transcending time (as we know it) to get to [...]

Abstract Images Defined on their own terms

Rather than words such as winter or summer, abstract images challenge the spaces in the mind that tangle with the heart. Ethereal imagery defies the dictionary definition of what is and enters into its own realm of what is not. The dreamy scenes transcend the world of logic and entice, tease, and beckon with their [...]

a Windy Spring Run in the Rollins Savannah Forest Preserve 5.6 miles

As always, whenever I photograph or do just about any kind of driving for any kind of reason, I enjoy finding and exploring new places through running or hiking. The internet and all the technology out here has provided a great way to explore “ahead of time”. Through websites such as mapmyrun, everytrail, Garmin [...]

One Year ago today – Having Survived the Canyon

Everything happened as visualized, except for the ice in the bottom of my boots. I couldn’t get my boots on! My bare feet & toes were so so cold but I could move them. I attempted to get my boots on once by putting my liners onto my feet first (Baffin boots are like a [...]

Multiple Exposure creates multiple scenes (and many ways of seeing) from just one

Scenic photography begs more time to interpret the personality and intricacies of the land. A thoughtless capture by a hurried photographer, seems to me sad indeed. Akin to shutting down a conversation with a beloved friend to place a television show as a priority, a rushed photo shudders with the frigidness that lacks compassion for [...]

Image of the day – Barn and Silo in the Snow (done with 4x multiple exposure in camera)

I was driving a few days ago through the country, not far from my home when this barn and silo combination caught my attention. The barn was left with just a face – no sides to house any animals or to stash any alfalfa bales or straw. The light was heavy in the clouds behind [...]

With a working knowledge of the camera, lenses, filters, tripod, etc, a photographer may transform from photographer (grabbing clinical "shots") into an artist. This image, with all of it's colors is not possible without the knowledge it takes to make it. However, you will want to KNOW how to make the image so that you can focus on the experience. The working knowledge is critical but if you can manage that knowledge in the background, you will be able to create art.

Kristen Westlake nature, wildlife, and landscape photography workshops : don’t expect the clinical approach. I won’t teach you how to become a “clone” photographer (taking the same images that everyone takes), I’ll help you to find your own style and become an artist of nature photography

If you live near me in Lake Geneva, check out my one day nature photography workshops for a single photographer. My newest addition to my unconventional workshop approach is the on location traveling workshop. If you (or a small group of friends) have a travel destination you can now contract me to turn some or [...]

Crescent Lake - Olympic National Park, Washington

Washington Coast’s Olympic Peninsula – Images of amazing reflections in Olympic National Park’s Crescent Lake

Olympic National Park of the Olympic National Forest is located on the Olympic Peninsula in the northwest corner of Washington State. Just over a year ago I was visiting Yellowstone National Park with my friend Kimberli. My trip was part of a 3 1/2 week trip through parts of the West, mostly National Parks. I wasn’t so enthralled by the many tourists but yet I was in a way enthralled with them because I am happy [...]

Greater Scaups facing challenges of waves on Lake Michigan on a blustery sub Zero temperature day

Challenge -

It’s been more than a few days since I’ve been on the trail for a few reasons. Sometimes reasons seem like roadblocks and can be highly frustrating when I’m trying to “get somewhere”.
