This beautiful kaleidoscope of rock formations, color and shapes exists in a wilderness area of Utah and Arizona desert. I was fortunate to be one of just 10 walk ins to get a permit in a lottery the day before at the BLM station located on highway 89 between Kanab Utah and Page Arizona. I got to the station before 8:30 and anyone who wished to be in the lottery that day (for a chance at a permit for the next day) had to be there by 9am. When I was there there were just 3 of us and a guy from Germany and I were keeping our fingers crossed that not many would show up. By 9 am there were 49 people with hearts pounding, awaiting their names to be called for a day to ponder one of the World’s most beautiful and solitary places. … see how the Coyote Butte lottery works (video)
.. Yes, I made it! I was the second person called .. If you have a group of people then the number in your group acts as one .. so I think in my lottery there were 14 numbers. The first called were two people so after them there were just 8 permits left. I was alone so after me there were seven and so on…
The drive the next day to get to Wirepass Trail head where I would enter Coyote Buttes North was treacherous .. An 8.5 mile drive on unpaved dirt road that had ruts bigger than I had ever thought my little Honda CRV could take made me uneasy at the start and people were passing me in cars… I had no idea how. But after the drive in and the awesome day hiking out to the Wave on no trails … the way back out I was reveling in the ruts and enjoying the way my Honda seemed to love the South West as much as I did! .. see video of me driving to the Wirepass Trailhead (quite comical)
