Coyote Buttes North to the Wave
Where? Bordering Utah/Arizona
Trail Description:
Incredible off the beaten path trek! No marked trail though footprints in the sandy areas will clue you in as to where you want to go (or where you don’t!). Once you have a permit you are allowed to go anywhere you wish in the Coyote Butte North Wilderness, however this trail GPX file loaded into your GPS will navigate you to the Wave and back. Though I went in with a GPX file when I did this hike I still managed to steer off the “track” just a bit. That “just a bit” can lead you to steeper areas which can challenge you in fun ways or require you to back track a little to get back into passes that allow you through with more ease.
The Wave is located just below the Utah border, in Arizona. The hike to the wave is an amazing kaleidoscope of shapes, color and texture. The hiking terrain translates to just as much of an experience as does the visual eye candy. Sandy terrain and slick rock of sandstone … up and down! This hike will challenge your navigation skills in a fun way. There are plenty of visual landmarks that will get you “there” and get you back. You will see twisted sandstone that will remind you of odd things such as hamburgers and mushrooms. It’s an Alice in Wonderland playground for sure .. let your imagination run as rampant as nature did when she created this remarkable place! The colors in the rocks twist with the hand of Mother Nature and her pastel crayolas. Heavier accents of yellow and red grace some of the structures and add to the dramatic landscapes that surround you on this wilderness hike. .. I don’t have to tell you to enjoy .. you won’t be able to help but do just that!
