This snowy owl image was made in Horicon a few years ago. It was a really cold day … I started out by setting an alarm for 3 am and then drove around 2 hours to get here before sunrise. I’d been here before to spend time with this little male so I went to his favorite tree, which was right off of Crazy Highway 49. I parked and waited. The only other photographer there was my friend Wayne Nelson.
Before dawn the action began… The owl caught a few voles and ate them before we had enough light to make images. But soon we were into the scene, quietly contemplating our camera action with the movement of this gorgeous fella…
Another day that I had my headlights on and “forgot” as the sun came up … And another drained battery. Wayne helped my car to recharge while I charged up on cold sweet potatoes. I was kindly teased by other photographers about the things I eat … But it keeps me out there :)

See and purchase snowy owl images for your wall.
At around 9 am the snowy owl had enough of his morning hunt and nestled into a muskrat house about 200 yards to the south side of highway 49. I waited, nourished with the the sweet potato … Although my bladder wasn’t quite so satisfied.
At the magic hour of the late afternoon the hunt began again and the little owl caught vole after vole in front of just three Photographers. The un baited bird Came right towards me, happy to entertain us with his skills in both hunting and stalking his prey.
…. It was the last day that anyone would see this bird … He flew back to or on to another destination …
