IAT- Heading back to the trail

The Ice Age Trail

The Ice Age Trail

now at least a few hours from any new trail head along the IAT the challenge has been getting up early enough to set out to get on the trail before it gets blistery hot and humid. I didn’t think I minded it too much but my body has been telling me differently. We’ve been managing to be on the trail at the worst hot and humid times of the day and heat rash has been my culprit along with bloating that won’t seem to go away! Strange, you’d think that hiking as much as I am that keeping weight ON would be the concern but in fact I’ve seemed to pick up about 5 pounds of fluid that are quite uncomfortable. Maybe my totem animal is really the camel!

The heat rash really needed to be reckoned with though and it’s essential to get on and off the trail before the heat and humidity is at it’s worst. This has been an extra hot and humid summer it seems ..
So I’m happy to report that I’ve been up since 4 am and am enroute to a trailhead north of Fond du Lac, WI. Looking quite forward to the serenity of the wooded trail and all the wonder that lies within the woods and the discovery of me.

More information about the Ice Age Trail:
From the Ice Age Alliance web site:
More than 12,000 years ago, an immense flow of glacial ice sculpted a landscape of remarkable beauty across Wisconsin. As the colossal glacier retreated, it left behind a variety of unique landscape features. These Ice Age remnants are now considered among the world’s finest examples of how continental glaciation sculpts our planet.

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a thousand-mile footpath — entirely within Wisconsin — that highlights these Ice Age landscape features while providing access to some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas.

The Ice Age Trail Alliance (formerly Ice Age Park & Trail Foundation) is a volunteer- and member-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to create, support and protect a thousand-mile footpath tracing Ice Age formations across Wisconsin — the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Ice Age Trail Alliance staff and volunteers work cooperatively with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, National Park Service, local governments, businesses and private landowners to shape the Ice Age Trail into one of the premier hiking trails in the United States. Your support as a new member, volunteer or sponsor is always very welcome.
