To keep a little warmer as the fall temps creep in simply cut a pair of thick socks and wear around your ankles!
I have been on task with an effort to eliminate the soreness that I experience in my achilles tendons while wearing Vibrams. I am still not quite certain if it is the shoes pressing against my achilles that are the culprit to the soreness or simply the adjustment and perhaps overuse of the tendon due to near barefoot running.
Because my soreness is in both tendons I tend to not think of the issue as tendonitis (usually occurs in one tendon versus both .. at least according to my past experiences). The soreness can be quite ouchy right after a hike or a run, but not during .. and then it now soon dissipates or at least gets down to very minimal soreness.
I have been using arnica to massage into my tendons up to 4 times a day, icing after running (first arnica massage and then ice), eccentric calf stretching and taking myo – tone to aid with ligaments and tendon strengthening. … Feels like they are getting stronger and the thickness has gone away …
With that said, I’ve looked for ways to love my Vibrams while allowing them less control over my achilles tendons.. they really push on the tendons. Today I took the strap OFF of my sport trek and it was much less pressure to the tendons right out of the blocks. .. However, I still had soreness upon completion of the run. But its almost gone now, just an hour later. … possibly still minimal pressure along the stiffest spot on the shoe.

I had the same thing happen to me on my right foot. I did my first “Vibram” 50 mile ultra in Trek Sports and crossed a river two times, and then cinching the strap down tighter because they got loose on my foot, but not realizing it was cutting into my Achilles really hard.
After the race it was super sore and I have concluded it was because of the strap and just not realizing that is what caused the stress. Now, a little over two weeks later, my Achilles still hurts there and I’ve taken two weeks off from running.
I Googled “strap pressed against Achilles” and your blog came up, so I’m glad I’m not the only one out there with this issue too. An article about my experience in VFFs was posted recently on this site http://birthdayshoes.com/evolution-of-an-ultrarunner-in-five-fingers-ksos-and-treksports.
Cheers!
