Levis Mounds “Two Trails in One Day” – 11 Miles

The second trail of the day … And much longer than the first. So when you see two blog posts from today, don’t scratch your head wondering if I’m just catching up. I’m not… I’m actually crazy enough to have run/hiked/photographed 2 trail systems enroute back today from the Chippewa Moraine…

Levis Mounds is one of my favorite trail systems of all time. I love mountain biking here, running, hiking and photographing here. It’s a scenic wonderland with it’s cliffs that beam in multiple colors as the sun high lights them.

On top of the cliffs are majestic viewpoints where one can see for miles. On top of the cliffs are also amazing scenes in the trees and their exposed roots. I’ve even tucked myself between the roots of one tree and fallen sound asleep!

The sandstone cliffs, the sandy trail, and the neiboring trees awaken my creativity. The scenes remind me of some of the Southwest sandstone scenics .. Except that Levis being Midwest, gives a different punch of color to the scene. It’s truly a unique place!

The Trail:
Highs:

Lows: gnats that get into my eyes… But I’ll take them over Mosquitos or deer flies any day!

ANIMAL TOTEMS: deer and two fawns

PEOPLE: 1 – my friend Darren coming in on his mountain bike as we were coming out!

WEATHER: 75, sunny

TRAIL CONDITIONS; beautifully maintained single track, variety! Sandy and soft underfoot in many places.

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

EQUIPMENT: Trail shoes for hiking or running

SEASONS: All. Cross Country skiing in the winter is amazing here!
