I’ve tracked trails now two times in order to record the six loops at Bong. The horse flies were horrendous the first day as well as today. However today I got there just about an hour later and by the time I was on the last loop (and my last leg.. I was tired today) the big blood thirsty flies had almost disappeared! … So it got really hot with the bright bright sun..
The habitat, it seems, that the deer flies enjoy is “fluent” in Bong Recreational Area. It’s a meadowy mix of small trees and shrubs that line either side of the well maintained trail.
As soon as I’d vanish from the sunlight and into the woods the horse flies got sparse and the mosquito pilgrimage began… Swarming me, their sound is one that creeps me out… But alas, they weren’t landing. My “Beat It” bug spray works like a charm and smells charming as well!
Bong Recreational Area requires a parking pass or a Wisconsin Parks Sticker. It’s a largely utilized area from camping to fishing to ATV driving, to bird watching (and of course bird photography!) … And lots of hiking trails!
6 loops meander the land for hiking, running, mountain biking, and cross country skiing. Thursday I tracked the two longer loops, the Orange, 6.4 miles and the Red loop, which is 8.3 miles.
Today I GPS tracked the shorter four hiking trails. The blue loop is 4.15 and the Yellow is 4.03. The shortest are the gray, which is 1.48 And the green, trekking in at 1.62 miles.
