West Fork of the Oak Creek Canyon Images
On March 13, 2010 I set out down through the canyon on Highway 89A, the canyon that leads Flagstaff to Sedona. I had read about an array of hikes in the Sedona region and was planning to do a photography hike, as I do often.
The hike I planned to do was located about half way down the canyon, elevation around 5700 feet, between Flagstaff and Sedona. It was said to be a beautiful place to make pictures, the canyon walls loaded with color. This is also a prime spot to hike in summer months, when the temperatures are too hot for many to hike in the red rocks of Sedona. The canyon walls are high and the temperatures cooler. The added benefit of crossing the Oak Creek 13 times also makes summer time hiking enjoyable.
This was not summer though which made for both pros and cons on the hike that I did in the Oak Creek Canyon. March 13 yielded lots of snow (you will see in the images), I saw very few people after crossing the first few creeks.
(Flagstaff had a lot of snow this winter!) so as the snow began to melt up the canyon, the creek was a much flooded creek with fast water.
It was fun crossing the creek with its fast moving water. I had first gone into the creek with hiking boots but turned back to get my baffin boots which I knew would serve me better, acting in a “wetsuit” effort in the cold water as I passed through the creek … I intended to get to the end and I did .. but I didn’t get out of the canyon that night.
You can read more about my story … but for now I’d like to show you the resulting Oak Creek Canyon images made the day of March 13 in the Oak Creek Canyon – South of Flagstaff, North of Sedona.

I fully agree with your point of view, excellent writing.
